Eulalie Banks

Sherman Oaks, CA

Eulalie Banks, children's book author and book illustrator and a San Fernando Valley Resident since 1948, died November 12th. She was 104.

During her work career she created or worked on more than 60 books including "Stories Children Love" in 1922. "The Brimful Book" in 1923, "Favorite Mother Goose Rhymes" in 1924, "The Bumper Book" in 1925 and "A Child's Garden of Verses" in 1929. "The Bumper Book" was re-illustrated in 1946 and re-issued in 1961.

The artist was known professionally only by her first name. She signed her works with that name plus a drawing of a little mouse. Her first book, published in London when she was 18, was "Bobby in Bubbleland".

Eulalie was a well known local muralist. She created designs for private homes, including those done for actors Harold Lloyd and Charlie Chaplin in the 1930's.

She also created the murals in the children's section of the main Santa Monica library in 1928. The original main library was demolished in 1974.

Banks was born June 12, 1895, in London, England. She immigrated to the United States in 1918. At the time of her death, she lived at Sherman Oaks Beverly Health and Rehab Center.

She is survived by a daughter, Athalie neely; granddaughter, Sally Hudson; a great-granddaughter; and nephew, Peter Turney and his wife, Jeanne.

There was no funeral or memorial service.
